The border crossing procedures on the Friendship Bridge between Thailand and Laos are quite simple. All vehicles (including buses) crossing the bridge must stop at both immigration checkpoints.

All buses crossing the bridge stop next to the immigration windows (canal far left).

Go to the 3D window and present your passport along with your completed Departure Form (or border passports for Vientiane or Nong Khai residents) to get a “stamp”. The bus driver (Thai-Lao International Bus Service) usually hands over the arrival/departure form at the beginning of the journey.

2. 6D window:Get customs clearance here. Lao residents will be asked to sign the Customs Clearance Form given to them upon entry into Thailand upon returning from Thailand, so the Customs Officer will keep the form here.

3. Toll booth:After all entry and customs regulations have been taken care of, you still have to pay the toll fee before crossing the border. Drive your car and stop at the booth in front of the bridge and pay the fee there (in cash).

Arrival procedures on the Thai side

Arriving by bus (Thai-Lao International Bus Service or Bus)

All buses must go to the leftmost arrivals channel and stop in front of Immigration (windows 2A and 3A), unload and go to the end of the channel to wait for passengers. All passengers have to get off here.

Go to the immigration window (2A and 3A) and present your border pass/passport to get an immigration stamp.

After stamping your passport/border pass, simply go through the customs channel where the customs officer(s) will sometimes briefly check your travel documents and/or bag(s). That's it, you've gone through all the border crossing procedures. Now just hop back on the same bus and enjoy a short ride to the bus station.

if you come overBuses Vientiane - Nong Khai(Thai-Lao International Bus Service) will take you to Nong Khai Bus Station near Phoxai Market, about 5-10 minutes drive.

Tip:Those arriving by Vientiane - Nong Khai bus and wishing to go to the Tesco Lotus in Nong Khai should take a tuk-tuk from the bridge (costs 60 baht or 30 baht in a shared tuk-tuk). The distance from Nong Khai bus station to Tesco Lotus is longer than from the bridge to Tesco Lotus, so a tuk-tuk ride takes longer, although the cost is about the same.

Arrival by private car

driving alone? Just head to the "Private Car" arrival channel on the right (pay attention to the directional signs as you exit the bridge). Park your car in the lots in front of the immigration desks and proceed to the immigration desks in the following order:

1. Window 4A:Present your travel documents (cross-border passports of everyone traveling in your car and car documents). The officer will usually ask for the driver's name, then fill out a form detailing all the passengers in your car and give you an arrival/departure form to fill out (corresponding to the passports/border passes you present). He/she will then give you this form to take with you to Window 5A along with your travel and vehicle documents.

2. Janela 5A:Please present your travel documents along with a completed Arrival/Departure Form, vehicle documents and the form in Window 4A. The officer at this window will hold the form, stamp your passport/border pass and car ID, and collect the entry fee200 Bahtper car (this entrance fee does not apply to Thai cars returning from Laos).

3. Window 6A:The officer here will ask for the driver's name, fill out a custom form and give it to you. You must sign this, leave a copy in the designated compartment and take another copy with you.

4. 6D window:Present the form you received and signed in window 6A to the customs officer in this window. He will sign the form and mail it back to you for you to keep until you return.

Exit procedures on the Lao side

The exit procedures on the Lao side are similar to those in Thailand, simple and straightforward. All vehicles crossing the bridge must stop at the immigration checkpoint at the Lao border to obtain entry clearance before entering Thailand.

This section explains in detail the border crossing procedures on the Lao side.

The start area is divided into five tracks/channels (from left to right) as follows.

Depart by bus (either Thai-Lao International Bus Service or bus)

Thai-Lao International buses drop off all passengers at the leftmost departure channel and then proceed to wait at the end of the channel.

Go to any of the immigration counters (D5, D6, D7) and present your passport/border pass with the completed arrival/departure form to get a “stamp” in your passport. After getting the exit stamp, go to the next window where you payexit feeplus overtime surcharge for journeys outside normal working hours from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (you will receive receipts for all charges). That's it, you can now get back on the bus to cross the border.

Border pass holders (Vientiane or Nong Khai residents) do not need to fill out an arrival/departure form, they simply present their border passes to be “stamped” and payfees.

Note: Lao border pass holdersmust obtain a barcode on their border passport before being granted entry clearance. The barcode processing booth is located directly in front of the immigration booths, costs 1,000 kip per trip. If you frequently cross the border, getting the multi-journey barcode will save you a lot of time.

Here are the simplified steps you need to follow (in sequential order):

1. Janela D2:Present your passport along with the completed Arrival/Departure form (or border pass for border pass holders), vehicle documents and passports/border passes of all passengers in your vehicle (if any) for 'stamping'.

2. Window D1.1:As soon as all documents have been checked and stamped, they will be handed over here. The officer will call your license plate when your documents are ready. This is where you pay all exit taxes, including exit tax for your car (table below), exit tax for all occupants in your car, if any (see passenger departure fee above), plus an overtime fee if you leave on weekends, public holidays or outside of business hours.

3. Customs officials and police:After all documents have been released, you must show them to the police and customs officers on the left side of the canal. The police will check all passports/border passes for "stamps" and customs will check your vehicle documents. They then ask to see your car and all passengers in the car.

4. Mautstelle:The stand is about 50 meters from the immigration channel. Drive your car and pay the toll. Have fun crossing the border from Laos to Thailand.

The toll fee can be paid with chip cards or in cash.
The chip card system has been in use for a long time and helps to significantly speed up the toll payment process. Car owners have to buy the cards (about 40,000 kip if I remember correctly and top them up at the booth next to the immigration desks).

Go to the immigration desk and present your passport along with the completed Arrival/Departure form (bus drivers usually drop off the form at the border prior to arrival). After stamping your passport, proceed to customs, where you may have stopped briefly to check your bags (they rarely do). Then go to the 'Entry Fee' booth where you will pay a fee. A policeman is sitting at the last table, who will briefly check your passport and welcome you to Laos.

Arrival by private car

If arriving by car, stamp your car documents at the immigration desk and customs desk. Then show your vehicle documents to the customs inspector and your passports (yours and any other passengers in the car) to the police officer at the counter in front of the grandstand. The customs officer will inspect your car before dropping it off and the police officer will check your passport to make sure it is stamped.
