GOOD FRIDAY
RESOURCES FOR MUSIC AND WORSHIP
Friday April 10, 2009
W. Patrick Alston, Sr., Lectionary Team Liturgist
Notes on Worship Planning
Good Friday services are often framed by preaching expositions of the seven cross calls. The occasion is solemn as it focuses on the suffering of Christ and his final sacrifice for the redemption of mankind. Traditionally, these services feature seven speakers and special music and art to enhance the service experience.
With the advent of mixed worship, this entry encourages worship leaders to diversify their presentation of music and art. Traditionally, worship leaders have made their best selection from a selection that reflects their church's preferred musical style. For example, some churches simply use appropriate hymns like Jesus, Keep Me Close to the Cross On Calvary, and The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power, while traditional evangelical churches may choose to make big hits of the past. like Jesus Dropped the Charges by the ONeil Twins, No Greater Love by the GMWA National Mass Choir and He would not come down from the cross by Margaret Douroux. Liturgical churches with heavy choral music programs, and churches whose music programs are not heavily oriented towards gospel music, tend to use excerpts or even full oratorios, such as: The Seven Last Words by T. Dubois, The Messiah by G. Handel, and The Matthew -Passion by J.S. stream. Diversity is required now. Keep this in mind when planning your service.Below are many different offerings for you to choose from and customize to suit the needs of your church.
Children and young people also use this service. Your youth choir, youth dance ministry, pantomime, etc. should all attend this service. We keep our observance of this day by teaching our children and youth by involving them in this service.
Consider the time. Ministers and musicians should come together to plan the most appropriate course of worship. If your service includes seven sermons or sermons, it can be difficult to make choices before or after each sermon. Worship leaders should determine the timing and location of appropriate selections.
1.Invocation or Letany
The Passion and Death of Christ | |
Führer: | Early in the morning all the chief priests and elders of the city made the decision to kill Jesus. They tied him up, took him away, and handed him over to Pilate, the governor. |
Community: | Then what should I think of Jesus, who is called Christ? Pilate |
Führer: | Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged and handed him over to crucifixion. Then the governor's soldiers brought Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. |
Community: | They stripped him naked and put on him a scarlet robe, and then braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, knelt before him and mocked him. Hail, King of the Jews! They said. |
Führer: | They spat at him, took the stick and hit him on the head. |
Community: | And when Jesus had cried out again with a loud voice, he surrendered. |
Führer: | At that moment the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks splintered. |
ALL: | When the centurion and those who were guarding Jesus with him saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified and cried out, "Truly he was the Son of God!" |
