In 1961, John W. Peterson wrote “Heaven Came Down and Glory Filled My Soul”, a gospel song that would become very popular with Baptists and other evangelical Christians. Eventually he found his way to the 1975Baptist hymn book🇧🇷 Part of its appeal was a blend of what some older Baptists called “experimental religion” with solid biblical teaching. Its third verse is from a Bible verse rich in visual imagery:
Born of the Spirit with life from above in the divine family of God,Fully justified by Calvary’s love, oh, what a credit to me!And the deal was done so fast when I came a sinner
Accepted the offer, from the grace He offered, He saved me, O glorify His dear name!

The verse that this song’s verse is taken from is visually appealing.The wind blows wherever it wants and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it’s going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit(João 3:8).
People see different images in their minds – the smooth movement of leaves on trees at the edge of a forest; the feeling of a cool breeze blowing across your face on a warm spring day; the bending motion of the gorse sage on a distant hill. I see the sagging sails of a ship stranded on calm seas – the ship of my life and yours. Then a breeze, however slight, ripples across the screen. Within a few minutes, the sail begins to swell as the wind picks up. The ship takes off. Soon, the strong wind is inexorably carrying him to his destination. John’s words are instructive –So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.
To bring the life-giving and sustaining breath of God into the cold, dead heart of the believer is the dominating work of the Holy Spirit. Beginning with Jesus’ teaching in John 14-16 and throughout the New Testament, the focus is on the Holy Spirit’s revelation, ministry, and role. The rapid spread of Christianity that has since swept the world is directly related to this omnipresent “wind”. The Holy Spirit blows where it wills – and in its wake swarms of believers are born into the kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit’s Compelling Role in Salvation
Speaking to His closest friends in the Upper Room on the eve of His crucifixion, Jesus introduced them to the far-reaching work of the Holy Spirit—the “other” Comforter (“Other” of the same essence), the blessed Paraclete. between the papersgod the spiritExercises is an attractive role. John 16:8-11 is very clear,When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment: of sin because they do not believe in me; about justice, because I go to the Father and you will see me no more; and of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Theologian Herman Bavinck wrote an important book entitledAn Introduction to Missiology🇧🇷 On the basis of the word translated as “condemned”, he coined the word elenkik. His argument, written in the context of the mid-20th century, was that the missionary strategies and methods of his time fell short of expectations.Great CommissionMandate. He wrote:
“If we talk about itElectronicwe do well to understand it in the sense it has in John 16:8. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin. The Holy Spirit is really the only conceivable subject of this verb, for conviction of sin is beyond all human capacity. Only the Holy Spirit can do that, even though he can and wants to use us as instruments in his hands.”2
The Holy Spirit, using the biblical message of the cross, “awakens in man this deep sense of guilt. He convicts people of sin, even where before there seemed to be no awareness of sin. The Holy Spirit uses the minister’s word and touches the hearer’s heart and makes it accessible to the word.”3
As the Holy Spirit convicts people of their sin, Jesus’ righteousness, and righteous judgment, He awakens the human heart to hear and see the truth in a new way. seeingand realize(vgl. Jesaja 6:10;Matthew 13:15), the human heart cries out to God.
In ancient times, Job experienced this firsthand.Surely I was talking about things I didn’t understand, things too wonderful for me to know… I had heard rumors about youbut nowMy eyes have seen you So I take back my words and repent of dust and ashes(Job 42:3, 5-6, emphasis added).
Before the Spirit of God touched his heart, Job felt free to speak his mind to God. Somewhere along the way, though, something transformative happened in her heart. Those who hadn’t seen it saw it now. Why? The ghost opened its eyes. He became convinced of his own finitude and of the eternal majesty and glory of God. An awakening has taken place. How? It is a mystery to us, for only the Lord God can effect such a change in the human heart. The whirlwind of God’s spirit confused Job’s every thought and directed him to see God and God alone. The wind blew away every last bit of earthly confidence and self-righteousness, and Job was changed.

One of my mentors like Christian pastor Conrad Mbewe from Kabwatabaptist congregationin Lusaka – Zambia liked to say something like this:
“It’s an amazing thing. You can give the same sermon to the same people in the same way in the same place and get two completely different responses. Something electric happens the first time. People are saved. God’s move is evident. Next time nothing seems to happen. No reaction, no energy, no movement. It’s always a sobering reminder. It’s not up to us. It’s up to Him alone.”
Gospel-HymneWriter Daniel Whittle captured the mystery of that moment in a beloved hymn of an earlier generation,I know who I believed🇧🇷 The second and third verses are particularly instructive. Each verse is followed by a chorus containing an exclamation of praise and faith.
I don’t know how he gave me this saving faith;Also how believing His Word brought peace to my heart.
But I know who I believed!
I don’t know how the Spirit moves to convict people of sin;Revealing Jesus through the Word, creating faith in Him.
But I know who I believed!
The Spirit of God glorifies Jesus, proclaims Jesus, and leads us to Jesus (John 16:13-14). Though He is active in so many other ways in our lives, this is such a precious gift – the gift of salvation.Giftof the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). The wind blew where it wanted and we are safe.
Assuming the role of the Holy Spirit in salvation
When Ruth returned to Naomi,Don’t convince me to leave you or come back and not follow you. For wherever you go I will go, and wherever you live I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God(Ruth 1:18) She was touched by a basic human need: the need for community, for relationship, for identity – the need to have a place, to belong, to be accepted.
This is exactly the kind of covenant relationship Heavenly Father offers through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Perhaps the most comforting aspect of our relationship with the King, Creator of the Universe, is this promise:I will be your god; you will be my people(See, for example, Exodus 6:7; Leviticus 26:12; Isaiah 40:1; 51:22; various reminders in Jeremiah 7:23; 11:4; 24:7; 30:22; the new covenant, Jeremiah 31:33; 32:38; Ezekiel 11:20; 14:11; 34:30; 36:28; 37:23-27; Joel 2:26-27; Zechariah 8:8; 9:16; 2 Corinthians 6 :16; Hebrews 8:10; Revelation 21:3).

In the ministry of the prophet Hosea, his life served as a divine example of Israel’s unfaithfulness to the Lord. His youngest children were given names that make our hearts tremble with grief and horror – “having obtained no mercy” (Lo-Ruhamah, Hosea 1:6) and “not my people” (admit, Hosea 1:8). These names commemorated not only Hosea’s wife’s unfaithfulness to him, but also Israel’s spiritual adultery against the Lord. Years later, after our Saviour’s first advent, aged Peter drew on Hosea’s experience to remind believers in Jesus Christ that wethose who did not get mercy now got mercy; We who were not a people before are now the people of God(1 Peter 2:10 KJV). We belong to the Lord as His “special” people (see Exodus 19:5; Titus 2:14; and 1 Peter 2:9 KJV) – for time and eternity – by adoption.
The apostle Paul introduced this adoptive aspect of our salvation in two key texts. Romans 8:15-16 puts it this way:For you did not receive the spirit of bondage to fall into fear, but you received the spirit of adoption, by which we cry, “Abba, Father!” The spirit itself, together with our spirit, testifies that we are children of God… .In Galatians 4 he wrote this:God sent His Son, born of a woman born under the law, to redeem those under the law so that we might be adopted as sons. And because you are children, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts and cried, “Abba, Father!” Then you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, an inheritance from God(4-7).
The Holy Spirit places the newborn follower of Christ into the spiritual family – the family of God. Then the Spirit puts a new song in the heart of each of God’s children (see Ephesians 4:17-20 and Psalm 40:3) and grants the believer a wholly undeserved intimacy with the Father. We who were not a people now have one“Aba, Pai!”Relationship with the King of Times. This mediating work of the Holy Spirit evokes praise and thanksgiving in the heart of the true believer in Jesus. And yet there is more to it all.
The Sealing Role of the Holy Spirit in Salvation
The Holy Spirit serves as the guarantee that what God began in our hearts will be completed in the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).
This “seal” of the Holy Spirit is specifically mentioned in three New Testament texts – 2 Corinthians 1:21, 22; Ephesians 1:13; and Ephesians 4:30. The sealing metaphor has a variety of meanings. Things were (and are) sealed to show ownership. Seals were also (and are) used to secure something in transit (see Romans 15:28). This is one of the reasons Southern Baptists are so adamant about the eternal security of believers, for when Paul wrote these words, the reader understood that the seal on a shipment could only be broken by the recipient upon arrival; thus the true believer is assured of safe arrival at that eternal destination. In addition, seals were (and are) used to guarantee the quality of goods. Finally, the seals provided (and do) provide proof of identity (see Romans 4:11).5
The wordin this, which is also found in only three New Testament texts (2 Corinthians 1:22; 5:5; Ephesians 1:14), is beautifully juxtaposed with the seal. Consistently translated “serious” in the KJV, more recent translations use synonyms such as “assurance” (ESV), “deposit” (NIV), and “deposit” (HCSB).
William Barclay, in hisNew Testament Words, wrote: “The word arrabon, in classical Greek, regularly refers to the deposit that a buyer had to make and pay for a bargain and which was lost if the sale was not made. It was the first installment [sic] which was the promise and guarantee that the rest would come in time.”6 He continued: “[What] Paul says is that God’s gift of the Holy Spirit to us here and now is a installment [sic], an assurance, a foretaste of the life the Christian will one day live if he lives in the presence of God.”7
Oswald Becker noted that Ephesians 1:14 interprets the other two occurrences of the word arrabon. “The Spirit, as the present pledge of our future inheritance, secures our final and perfect salvation, that is, eternal fellowship with God… [I]n the believer’s seal, the Holy Spirit is promised to the human heart. The future reality , represented by the promise of the spirit, appears in 2 Corinthians 5:5 as the ‘house’ expected by heaven that will one day replace the ‘tent’ of our earthly bodies.”8

Noting the theological significance of the interplay between “seal” and “entrance” in 2 Corinthians 1:21-22, David Garland noted: “This guarantees that our relationship with God is not fleeting, but permanent and transcendent, it will be our death.” 9 He further observed, “Believers do not receive aPartof the Holy Spirit, but the Spirit himself is the counsel that gives a foretaste and guarantees the glory to come.”10
Conclusion
Of course, the Holy Spirit works in many other ways in the believer’s life – equipping him for ministry, giving him gifts for ministry, bestowing joy, strengthening him for a life of growth in grace, leading believers ever closer. to the full form of faith. he transforms Christ and performs the work of sanctification. As His wind begins to blow over the fragile shell of our lives, He continually fills our sails and our souls with His presence, love, grace, and compassion. He will encourage us as a Comforter. He will fill our hearts with song.
He will be our God. We will be his people.
