Specs of PS5 vs PS4 vs PS4 Pro
Even a cursory look at the PS5’s specs shows that it’s in a different league than the PS4 (and even the PS4 Pro). Sony has enhanced its platform’s capabilities in every aspect, adding more efficient storage, faster compute components, support for larger capacity drives and support for higher resolutions. We know that there are two versions of the PS5:the standard edition and the digital edition- both offer the same specifications (except for the omission of a drive on the Digital Edition).
|Playstation 5||Playstation 4||PlayStation 4 pro|
|UPC||8 cores, 16 threads, up to 3.5 GHz
|8 Jaguar-Kerne, 1.6 GHz||Jaguar with 8 cores, 2.1 GHz|
|graphic card||36 CU bei 2.23 GHz, 10.3 TFLOP
|18 CU bei 800 MHz, 1.84 TFLOPS||36 CU bei 911 MHz, 4.2 TFLOPS|
|Storage||16 GB GDDR6||8 GB GDDR5||8 GB GDDR5|
|Internal memory||825GB custom SSD||500GB 1TB hard drive||1TB hard drive|
|external storage||Ranura SSD NVMe, USB hard drive||2.5 inch hard drive, USB hard drive||2.5 inch hard drive, USB hard drive|
|video output||4K@120Hz, 8K||1080p||4K|
We’ll go into the details of most of these specs in this comparison. However, as a general note, it is important to keep the context of these specifications in mind. The PS5 is a much newer console based on a different architecture, so some of the specs shouldn’t be compared directly.
For example, the PS5 and PS4 Pro have the same number of Compute Units (CUs), but the CUs in the PS5 have a much higher transistor density, making them more powerful than the CUs in the PS4 Pro, which can be directly compared. The PS5, for example, has a significantly better optical drive and resolution support.

PS4- vs. PS5-Grafik
Both the PS4 and PS5 are based on custom AMD Radeon chips, although the latter packs a lot more punch. Sony boasts double the CU in the PS5 and a significantly higher clock speed. However, the biggest difference between the two is the increasingly important TFLOPs.
“Teraflops” ista hot word for console developers, And for a good reason. While TFLOPS isn’t a holistic performance indicator, it’s a solid number to reference when making comparisons. The PS4, with its 18 CUs running at 800MHz, clocks at 1.84 TFLOPS, meaning it can handle 1.84 trillion floating-point operations per second. In contrast, the PS5’s GPU is rated at 10.3 TFLOPs.
Based on that one number, the PS5’s GPU is roughly eight times more powerful than the PS4 and two and a half times more powerful than the PS4 Pro. Sony is able to achieve such high performance thanks to the PS5’s 36 CUs and at a higher clock frequency. Above the PS4, the cores of the PS5 run at 2.23GHz with variable frequency.
While a higher clock speed is expected, we aremore interest in variable frequency. Speed is capped at 2.23GHz but drops depending on GPU demand. The PS4 is locked to 800MHz and will vary performance depending on the workload to match the clock speed. More demanding games require more power, but the speed is always 800MHz.
For the next generation, performance is the constant and clock speed is the variable. In the PS5 tech reveal, systems architect Mark Cerny explained why this was the case, explaining that a 36 CU, 1GHz graphics core would generate the same amount of TFLOPs as a 48 CU, 750MHz core (4th generation). .6 TFLOPS). but the gaming performance would not be the same.
The general idea is that higher clock speed is better, not more CUs, since the additional slower drives wouldn’t have enough computation to do their job. By allowing a variable frequency, the PS5 GPU can achieve much higher clock speeds than expected, as long as the higher frequency can be supported by the system’s power budget.
So far we’ve compared the graphics of the PS4 and PS5 in raw numbers, but that doesn’t take into account the latter’s system’s more modern architecture. Each of the PS5 CUs has approximately 60 percent more transistors than a PS4 CU. As Cerny pointed out in his presentation, this means that the PS5’s 36 UC equates to the same performance as the PS4’s 58 UC.
In short, the PS5’s graphics capabilities are far more impressive than the PS4’s. The PS5’s GPU will have more cores, and those cores will be faster and more efficient.
Resolution PS4 vs PS5
The PS5’s higher graphical fidelity will likely push games to resolutions never seen before. For output, the PS5 supports 4K at 120Hz and 8K, both with variable refresh rates anddetermined by HDMI 2.1. In contrast, the base PS4 can output at 1080p, often downsampled in-game based on power consumption, and the PS4 Pro can output at 4K.
Sony is very innovative with an HDMI 2.1 output, even if most TVs still do not have an HDMI 2.1 connection. The new standard supports higher resolutions and frame rates, but those caps won’t matter for years or even decades. More importantly for gaming, HDMI 2.1 supports variable refresh rate, which prevents screen tearing.

As we move into the next generation of consoles, we suspect that resolution will be a key marketing point, as Microsoft and Sony have already insisted their consoles support 8K resolutions. While this is true and even exciting, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be playing at 8K.
8K displays are likely to become more common towards the end of the PS5’s lifecycle. At the moment the focus is on 4K. The big issue with the PS5 is support for 120Hz displays, as there are already a large number of TVs and monitors that support 4K and higher refresh rates. Assuming the GPU has the power to transfer 60 frames per second and beyond, you should be able to use a high refresh rate TV with the PS5.
PS4 vs. PS5 Price
It’s the beginning of a new generation.
– PlayStation (@PlayStation)12. November 2020
With the greatly improved specs and implementation of the SSD, it makes sense that the PS5 would be more expensive than the PS4. The standard edition costs $499.99 while the digital edition costs $399.99. Given the speed of the PS5 and the fact that it will play 99% of your PS4 games, the value is there. In fact, once you have a PS5, you wouldn’t need a PS4.
Interestingly, the PS4 isn’t that much cheaper than the PS5. You can currently pick up a 1TB PS4 Slim model for around $299.99 and a 1TB PS4 Pro for $399.99. You could do that back thentake a ps5, as it can do almost everything the PS4 does, but better. It’s surprising to see such a small price difference between the two, but in today’s gaming landscape, console makers need to remain price competitive.
PS4 vs. PS5-Speicher
The PS5 doesn’t see an upgrade in storage capacity over the PS4, or at least over the PS4 Pro. If you still have a standard PS4, you’ll see slightly more storage, with the base PS4 model sitting at 500GB of storage and the PS5 at 825GB. Those with a later PS4 or Pro model will actually see a drop in capacity, losing around 175GB of storage.
Performance is the key difference. The PS5 packs a custom SSD with a raw read bandwidth of 5.5GB/s. Sony’s new storage medium is designed specifically for the PS5, allowing it to communicate more effectively with the PS5’s architecture. Therefore, the 825 GB capacity may seem a bit strange at first.
Even a commercial SSD would run much faster than the PS4’s hard drive, with the older system rocking a mechanical drive at 5400 rpm. In addition to the performance benefit of flash-based storage, the PS5 also gets a new SSD controller. This driver supports hardware decompression for ZLIB, but more importantly, Oodle Kraken.
(Video) The Best Gaming TVs for PS5, Xbox & PC | Gaming TVs for Every Budget
Kraken is a newer compression and decompression algorithm from RAD Game Tools that can compress smaller files than ZLIB and decompress faster. In practice, this means that game files can be read from flash modules, decompressed and sent to the system much faster on the PS5 than on the PS4.
Current PS4 users have already benefited from efficient decompression as current games likeMarvels Spider-ManjStar Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderRendering based on what the player can actively see and loads irrelevant data from the game world. Up to this point, the developers have been forced to leave at least some assets in the game world, as the PS4’s hard drive isn’t fast enough to deliver the required data in a timely manner (remember the texture pop-up). .
Of course, games load faster with the new SSD, but developers also have more freedom when displaying assets. Because the PS5’s storage is as fast as it is, game files can be read from the storage device and sent to the system in milliseconds, opening up many more options for viewing game content. .
The biggest bottleneck is capacity, which luckily the PS5 has a solution for. Just like PS4, you can upgrade your PS5 storage with out-of-the-box parts. However, instead of throwing out a 2.5-inch hard drive, you can learn how to do itHere- They will insert oneSSD-NVMe.
Compared to the PS4, you will see a significant performance boost with a PCI-e NVMe SSD compared to a 2.5” and even a standard mechanical drive.SSD-SATA. However, the open nature of the PS4’s center is absent on the PS5; You’ll have to wait for PCI-e 4.0-based drives to hit the market before expanding the PS5’s capacity.
PS4 vs PS5 Games
The PS4 has a long list of great exclusive games includingblood borne,God of War,Until dawn,Unexplored 4, and more. Luckily, you can still play these games on your PS5 (more on that in a minute), and in most cases they’ll run and look better on the new computer. That’s the good thing about the new system. Keeping backwards compatibility in mind, all your old PS4 games will still work on PS5.
But of course, the real reason to get a PS5 is for gaming.and won’t miss this fall. Highlights includeDemon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Godfall, jSackboy: A great adventure. But the list of games doesn’t end here. we know aGod of WarSequel is in the works, along withLast fantasy 16,Forbidden Horizon West, Gran Turismo 7,death loop, and many others. Compatibility with previous versions
Although the PS4 hasa developed list of high quality exclusive products, that doesn’t mean you should sleep on Sony’s new console. in oneofficial PlayStation blog post, SVP of Platform Planning, Hideaki Nishino, explained how backwards compatibility will work between PS4 and PS5. Nishino initially said that “over 99 percent of the 4,000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5,” and now we know how that’s going to work.
PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS4, PSVR and games available through PS Now and PS Plus, with very few exceptions.
(Video) The Best PS5 Audio settings | PlayStation’s never sounded this good!
Surprisingly, there are only 10 games that won’t be backwards compatible with PS5. The list is as follows:
- Afro Samurai 2 Kuma’s Revenge Volume One
- TT Isla de Man – Ride on the Edge 2
- Deal with it!
- Shadow Complex Remastered
- Robinson: The Journey
- we sing
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Joe Esser
Unfortunately, backwards compatibility begins and ends with PS4 games. PS1, PS2 and PS3 games aren’t backwards compatible, although we suspect Sony will keep support for classic titles through the PlayStation Store, just like it did on PS4.
In addition to new games, the PS5 also supports bigger games than the PS4. Both the PS4 and PS4 Pro come with a standard Blu-ray drive. Blu-ray discs can store up to 25GB of data on a single layer, and while up to six layers are possible, the vast majority of Blu-ray discs do not exceed two layers.
The PS5 is equipped with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, similar to the Xbox One X. In addition to playing UHD movies from a disc, the new optical drive bay can expand the possibilities of Ultra HD Blu-ray -Use discs. UHD Blu-rays currently support three capacities: 50GB and 66GB with two tiers and 100GB with three tiers. Unlike standard Blu-rays, games should have the highest capacities.
PS4’s DualShock 4 vs. PS5’s DualSense
Adding to the big differences between the two machines, the PS5 will offer a new version of the PlayStation 4 controller that will do away with the DualShock moniker entirely. Instead, the PS5 comes with DualSense, a controller that offers better battery life, adaptive triggers, and most importantly, haptic feedback. The idea with adaptive triggers is to offer different levels of resistance depending on what you’re doing in-game. For example, shooting a bow feels very different than shooting an automatic machine gun, which feels different than a shotgun.
The variable amount of tension is intended to make the player feel more immersed in the game. Haptic feedback works in a similar way, but with the vibration of the controllers. Dynamic vibrations are used to represent different surfaces or even show recoil with weapons. It’s up to developers to design with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in mind, so we expect games on PS5 to continue to support this. Based on early previews of the PS5, DualSense appears to be the shining star.
Despite that, DualSense and DualShock 4 share many similar features. Each offers the expected identical button layouts. One difference is that the Create button has recently replaced the Share button, which allows users to live stream gameplay and share screenshots and videos with other users. You can still enjoy the awesome built-in microphone and headphone jack, as well as a built-in speaker, motion sensor, and handy touchpad.
PS4 vs PS5 editions
As mentioned above, you have options when decidingbuy ps5. One version is disc compatible, while the other can store copies of digital games purchased online. Which model you ultimately choose depends on your individual preferences: disc or digital. We looked at the systems during the presentation and found that the drivers matched the color scheme and design style. The next-gen console features black and white colors along with a small curve in the middle. Without a built-in drive, the digital output is slightly shorter, smaller, and has a more modern design.
The two-version PS5 is very different from the 2013 PS4, which only offered one hard drive system. Over the years we’ve seen the release of other models, like the PS4 Pro and the PS4 Slim; However, these came much later. We expect to see another generation from Sony soon, consisting of a compact and increasingly powerful model of the PS5.
