Every year, thousands of people are injured in accidents involving warehouses.transporterIn fact, according to DC Velocity, they are responsible for between 9,000 and 10,000 accidents and 30 to 40 deaths a year. A conservative estimate puts the total number of workdays lost as a result of warehouse accidents at a staggering 95 million. If that’s not bad enough, add an average direct cost to a company for a warehouse accident between $38,000 and $150,000 and it’s clear that warehouse accidents can be a big problem. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published general guidelines for transporter safety. As you’ll see below, these guidelines are high-level and limited. In many cases, local municipalities and/or equipment manufacturers will require standards to be met.transport equipmentcan be extremely dangerous if not used correctly and with the necessary safety precautions. In addition toOSHA Construction Safety Standards for Conveyorsdescribed below, we will also discuss additional carrier safety guidelines recommended by Bastian Solutions.
General carrier safety requirements
ASME B20.1 – 5.11 Controles
Means to stop the engine or engine must be provided at the operator’s station. Conveyor systems must be equipped with an audible warning signal that sounds immediately before starting the conveyor.An audible horn should sound for 3 to 5 seconds beforeTransport systemIn addition, Bastian Solutions programs all system startup buttons to be pressed continuously for the entire 3-5 second period that the alarm sounds before the conveyors are powered up.
If the operator’s station is at a remote point, similar provisions must be provided to stop the engine or engine at the engine or engine location.For areas of the system that are not close to an operator workstation, Bastian Solutions uses emergency stop switches and handles. All emergency stop circuits must fail in the event of loss of power in the emergency stop circuit. Large systems can be broken down into multiple emergency stop circuits, and a general rule of thumb is that an operator should be able to stop any conveyor within his line of sight by activating the nearest emergency stop.
Emergency stop switches must be arranged so that the conveyor cannot be restarted until the drive stop switch has been reset to the run or “on” position.Bastian Solutions designs our control systems so that a system reset requires two things:
- The lanyard stop switch or trip lanyard must be reset.
- A conveyor start button must be activated.
Depending on the size of the system, there may be multiple system launch buttons throughout the system. Most electrical control panels also have a system start button. At Bastian Solutions,our systemsare provided with aHMI (Human Machine Interface)These graphical representations allow operators to quickly identify the location of the triggered E-Stop. Once the local emergency stop has been reset, our systems can be restarted remotely via our HMI. This is a very useful and time-saving feature.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart E and ASME B20.1 – 5.10 Clearance
All intersections, walkways and gangways shall be clearly marked with appropriate signs as required by Subpart E of this part.Output is a very important security consideration when designing systems. Specific regulations vary by municipality, but the overall goal of the project is to ensure that workers can exit the facility as quickly and safely as possible in the event of an emergency. Exit routes must be clearly marked. There are several different methods forcross a conveyor line🇧🇷 The most accepted is a transverse conveyor. A cross conveyor is exactly what the name suggests, a platform separated by two flights of stairs where an operator literally walks across the conveyor. Standards for cross conveyors vary by county. Accepted designs will meet or exceed the International Building Code (IBC). In some cases, a ship’s ladder design is acceptable. This is similar to a conveyor belt crossing, where ladders are replaced by stepladders. Conveyor steps are not a common method of safely crossing a conveyor line because they rely on the operator literally stepping on the conveyor when crossing it. they are also commonly used to cross conveyors. However, as they require operators to physically lift a gate and, if not properly controlled, can accumulate product in them, they are generally not recommended or accepted on outbound routes.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147(c)
Conveyors must be blocked off or rendered inoperative and marked “Do Not Operate” during repairs and when operation is hazardous to personnel performing maintenance work.Failure to properly lock and tag conveyors is one of the most common culprits for serious injury and death in warehouses and manufacturing facilities. Many of these installations are extremely large and it is common fortransporterbeing worked on is located in an area that is not visible from the electrical control panel. Not leaving the conveyor down during maintenance is a recipe for disaster.
All conveyors in use must meet applicable design, construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and operating requirements as prescribed in ANSI B20.1, Safety Code for Conveyors, Ropeways and Related Equipment.Security standards are constantly changing and it is extremely important for facility managers to ensure that their systems comply with the latest standards.
